Oh My... Indiana University Basketball!

Today was all about our Indiana University Men's Basketball team! We ordered jersey numbers, graphed players by position and year in school, put their names in alphabetical order, drew two basketball jerseys, wrote sentences on what we would do if we were an IU basketball player, and wrote an acrostic poem on a players first name.

I made each child a packet and set up seven stations around the room. Students were grouped in pairs and had 10-ish minutes to complete each station. They worked at each station independently with their partner except for the "acrostic poem" station. Even though it was a new concept they seemed to grasp the concept easily!

They all worked really hard- I was very impressed. I hope you enjoy and celebrate the work completed in your child's packet!

Number Bracelets

This week in mathematics we are focusing on decomposing numbers up to 10. Today in math we designed our "Number Bracelets" to help us strengthen those skills. I made sure to differentiate this activity by basing the number of beads per bracelet to their specific skill level. I geared up to 25 and as low as 6.

Each student selected a pipe cleaner. Then they put their beads on in whatever order they chose. Lastly, I  taped the pipe cleaner together and wrote the number of beads on the tape. Once we were done with that students created problems based off their bead number.

Hoo Hoo Hoo Hoosier

Thought I would share a couple photos from last nights IU game!

On Friday I have "designed" math stations that are "IU Basketball" themed. We will be graphing, measuring, decomposing numbers, and comparing sizes! I know they will have an absolute blast while they learn!! Check back over the weekend for photos! :)

Poem Reading + Manner of the Week

This week I wanted to include our weekly word wall word poem with the manner of the week- being best friends! Since we are moving into writing complete sentences, I thought it would be a great idea to have students copy my poem and then illustrate what the poem meant to them! Here is just a few poems + illustrations. I was pleasantly surprised with how neat their handwriting is becoming- they are all doing such an amazing job!

The 5 Senses

For our topic this week we are  learning about the five senses!

(1) Monday we had a dental hygienist visit from Southern Indiana Pediatric Dentistry. She read the children a book about a friendly visit to the dentist, demonstrated how to effectively brush teeth using the alligator, and discussed what foods to stay away from using the large tooth. The children really enjoyed her visit and loved learning how to keep your teeth looking nice and healthy!

(2) Tueday we had an eye doctor, Miccah Hoffman, visit from Vision Mart Eye Center. She discussed a typical eye examination and how the eyes works. Dr. Hoffman provided several pictures of eyes and gave each kid an "eye" toy!
