Measuring Away

This week we learned the very general concept in measurement. We discussed that measuring includes length, weight, area, and volume. We provided examples of each type of measurement and pondered on some past times when we or our family measured something.

Activity (1): Actual Size

Ms. Amy and I decided to team up for this lesson (love working with her!). We started by reading this fantastic and exciting book about the actual size of animals- big and small. It gives examples of the size and weight of various animals and parts of animals. After reading we had our kiddos get their hands a little dirty! Each child received a picture of a gorillas hand and some paint. They put their hand in the paint and then pressed it against the gorillas. Everyone was shocked to see how little their hand looked compared to the gorillas. After our hands were clean, we headed outside to measure with sidewalk chalk the length of some of the very HUGE animals from the book.

Activity (2): Float or Sink?

Before getting our hands wet for this project, we discussed how water and weight effect each other. We thought about times when we jumped in the pool, stepped in the bathtub, filled a glass with ice, etc. What happened to the water? What happened to the object that was placed in the water? Once I felt we had a grasp on the topic we started throwing random objects in the water to see if they would float or sink. For every object we discussed why it sunk or floated. After we completed the project they each had a chance to clean and carve a pumpkin! We will be using the carved pumpkin for another project next week.

"EWWW my hands are sticky! Gross!" Oh Gee!
