Winter Projects!

Picture Perfect...

Students had a great time creating their own winter themed picture frame. I printed several different group pictures and let students pick their favorite photo to add to their custom frame. I heard several "I love today!" and laughs while they worked! 

Snow Globe Fun

This has always been one of my favorite winter projects. I love watching students get so excited to see themselves inside a winter wonderland. It's also a very easy project to complete. :) 

Materials Needed: Glycerin, water, glitter, laminator, hot glue gun and a medium-sized jar. 

Steps: Laminate picture of student, glue picture to lid using hot glue gun, add glycerin and glitter to jar, fill jar with water and then securely put the lid on the jar. 

Celebrating Groundhog Day!

6 more weeks of winter or spring....

Groundhog Day is a popular tradition in the United States that is celebrated on February 2nd. This is the day where the Groundhog comes out of its hole after a long winter sleep to look for its shadow. According to the folklore, if it is cloudy when the groundhog emerges from its burrow, then spring will come early. If it is sunny, the groundhog will see its shadow, go back into its burrow and the winter weather will persist for six more weeks. 

Our class predicted that the Groundhog will see its shadow and the winter weather will stay for six more weeks. After we predicted, we watched the video of Punxsutawney Phil, the Groundhog, reveal its prediction! Our class predicted correctly! The Groundhog did see its shadow. Sorry for those who live in places where "real" winter weather exists. Luckily for us in Southern California, we enjoy our winter weather just as much as our spring weather. :) 

"I Have a Dream..." Celebrating MLK Day!

Martin Luther King Jr. was a civil rights leader that changed the world for better. This week we have focused on Dr. King's legacy of tolerance, equality and respect. 

When reading about Martin Luther King Jr., children were shocked with how unfair those times used to be. "That is so bad teacher!!" They had a hard time understanding why people were treated differently because of the color of their skin.    

Students completed a science activity where they examined a white and brown egg. Then they cracked the egg to see if there were any differences on the inside. In conclusion students found that no matter what color you are on the outside, we are all the same on the inside. <3

Santa Clause is coming to IVY! 

Children were beyond excited for Santa Clause to come to our school. They anxiously waited by the windows to see if they could spot his sleigh and listened quietly for his sleigh to land on the roof. Once Santa did arrive students were jumping up and down with joy.
