Jelly Bean Graphing and Fraction Matching

This morning we completed a Jelly Bean Graphing activity. (I know you're thinking why would I give Kindergartners sugar in the morning-Oh well we had a blast!!) I gave each student a random handful of jelly beans, placemat and a graphing worksheet. They had to organize, record and analyze their data. Students did a great job staying organized and completing the activity with very few errors- they are SO smart! :)

Fractions Match Up! Today we focused on the spelling of fractions. They did a fabulous job staying on task and collaborating with each other as they completed the activity. They rock with fractions! Tomorrow we will start adding and subtracting with like denominators- 4th grade work. They truly amaze me.

Today we finally made it from bridge to bridge! Over a mile walk each way- they definitely were a bit tired afterwards. Hopefully they sleep well for you tonight. ;) 

Teamwork Puzzle Time!

To work on our teamwork skills we completed a USA puzzle using ONLY positive words and a pleasant tone of voice. It was a bit difficult for them at first. They each wanted to have pieces of the puzzle. In the end those who didn't have a puzzle piece found they could contribute in other ways. For example, one contributed by holding the USA map for everyone to see.

MCPL Storyhour Extravaganza and B-Line Trail!

Our kids love walking to the Monroe County Public Library for Storyhour Extravaganza! The theme for this month was Spring Cleaning. We sang songs, listened to stories and watched a short film. Afterwards we wandered into the children's section to check out books for our classroom.

As we walked to and from the MCPL, we spotted several different landmarks/Americana themes. They were making connections everywhere! "Hey, there is our Indiana State Flag!" "Look at the compass rose on top of the courthouse." "Why is there a fish above the courthouse?" We definitely love getting out in our community! Yay for spring :)

Egg Hunt Math

Happy Spring!

To review our math theme for this week, we went on an egg hunt to find and solve addition and subtraction problems. Students had to use a magnifying glass to find a math problem on each egg. Once they found the math problem, they had to rewrite the equation and solve. 

Students used a variety of strategies to solve; including counters, fingers, number lines and mental math. Students solve using the strategy that works best for them- along with a little input from me! In the beginning of the year we worked with each strategy to find how they best solve different types of problems. Now, students know which strategy they prefer.
